Particle branching growth study
The particle simulation was cached and then played back at 1/4 speed. Trails are then generated from the cached particle paths. An animated noise deforms the trails to add some organic movement.

Alternate versions with differing modifier settings can be seen below.
Added some forces to make the particles follow the land topology closely.
An alternate styling using lights on some of the particles and a spread out branching pattern.
Shorter clumps of branches that start below the surface so you don't see as much of a single root. Extra noisy because I was too impatient to let it render.
